This is a world like our own but so different. Muhammad Ali was the 40th president of the United States. Elvis Presley was a vampire. The Confederacy won the first American Civil War. The Nazis won the Second World War. Now four great empires stand on the verge of World War III.Half-android Shade Freeborn is a bounty hunter at a time when cruelty has become the new entertainment. Shade specializes in hunting down vampire serial killers. When an android is due for decommissioning, they must report in, bringing the little, red suitcase that they were issued with, to be sent to the ‘melting pot’ or the spare parts shelves. But some go on the run and become Runaways. Shade has never yet hunted Runaways, because his father is one.Shade’s human mother died when Shade was seven years old in circumstances he has blocked from his mind. He is effectively an orphan. He is also a teenager on the cusp of manhood. Being half-android only makes his quest for identity harder, while love seems out of reach. After he was captured as a streetkid in a cull in New York, he was inducted into the military and trained to be a ruthless killer. He became the first person ever to gain his freedom by surviving a year’s service in the notorious Death Battalion. Shade only knows war and murder, so even more terrifying for him than being confronted by a devil-demon, is the succession of females he is forced to deal with: the mysterious and beautiful Eva, the enigmatic android Anastasia who has been programmed to love him, the Asian spy Pink Pussy Cat and more…Shade is scheduled for decommissioning on his 18th birthday. He also discovers that there is an order from the secret vampire society The Order of the Dragon, to kill him on that same day. Which will get him first? Shade is not bothered. He is a warrior. He expects every day to be his last.Yet there is one important fact that Shade is not aware of. That he alone can save the world- can rid it of disease, poverty, ignorance and war. This journey of self-discovery begins when he first finds out about Book of Arith, the oldest book ever written, believed to be lost. As a half-human, half-android, Shade is of the lowest social caste in modern America and yet at the end of his journey, he will discover his true, noble identity. The Shade series is written by Tony B. Williams who is based in New Zealand. He is the author of 38 previously published books, most of them non-fiction, including true crime.
